Description

In today’s South, where fine gardening is a tradition, many homeowners and professional gardeners are discovering a vast “new” palette of plant materials—native plants. They are realizing that these native wildflowers, trees, shrubs, groundcovers, vines, and grasses are far better suited, and therefore easier to grow and maintain, than most of the imported plants that populate traditional landscapes. In this book, the authors offer an exciting vision of the many possibilities and advantages of “going native.” Lavishly illustrated with more than 300 gorgeous color photographs, this book is both an introduction to more than 280 of the most familiar and easiest-to-find native plants of the South and a basic primer on how to use them effectively.

As a master gardener, living in South Carolina in the Charlotte metropolitan region, I find "Gardening with Native Plants of the South" a very readable and helpful book. Many books and articles about native plants focus more of the macro issues: Dangers of invasive plants, effects on birdlife, etc. This book focuses more on the plants themselves. I found it especially helpful that plants are grouped according to use (e.g. "Evergreen Trees Over 50 Feet Tall," "Tall Shrubs 10 to 15 Feet Tall," etc.)Each tree, shrub or vine is illustrated by a color photo and a description of unique features, plus details on where it is likely to thrive. Finally, Sally W. shares personal insights about why she loves a certain tree, etc. Lots of info conveyed in useful but personable format
